The Department of Labor could release a report next month responding to a complaint that Peru is failing to comply with labor standards under a 2009 trade agreement with the U.S., said Eric Gottwald, legal and policy director for the International Labor Rights Forum.

The report, scheduled to be released March 18, is the result of an investigation the Labor Department launched based on the complaint filed by ILRF and Peruvian labor unions representing garment, textile and agricultural workers. The groups argue that Peru’s Non-Traditional Export Promotion Law violates international standards on the rights of workers to organize because it allows employers to continue hiring workers on short-term, temporary contracts — some as short as 15 days.
