ILRF strongly believes that all certification system are a step in the right direction but that ultimately workers must have a say in their workplaces.

Survey Report on Child Labor in Uzbekistan

The use of forced child labor in Uzbekistan’s cotton harvest is widespread, and violates both Uzbekistan’s domestic law and its international legal commitments. This is the conclusion of a group of human rights defenders who monitored the use of forced child labor in two of the country’s provinces, Kashkadaria and Syr Daria. Their report is based on the 141 interviews that resulted, with students, parents, farm and healthcare workers and local residents.

Colombia is the most dangerous country in the world for union organizing. More trade unionists are murdered in Colombia every year than in the rest of the world combined. According to the Solidarity Center of the AFL-CIO, roughly 4,000 Colombian trade unionists have been murdered in the past 20 years, more than 2,000 of them since 1991.

Good bulbs, bad jobs: Workers and Conditions Behind Your New Compact Fluorescent

A major supplier of compact fluorescent light bulbs to General Electric Co. requires many to work a 64-hour week that exhausts workers and violates Chinese labor law. Many workers at the plant in southern China, which is partly owned by GE, have no idea they are producing a product containing toxic mercury, and do not receive training on how to respond to its possible dangers. Those were among the findings of a study overseen by Policy Matters Ohio. The study, conducted in late 2007, found that Xiamen Topstar Lighting Co.

On November 17, 2006 the management-led “Caretaker Committee” (supposed to be a caretaker committee of the union of the workers at CWFI) had filed a petition to cancel the registration of the union at the Region IV-A office of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

A series of hearings had been scheduled by the DOLE Region IV office from December 12 & 28, 2006; January 16, 2007; and February 6, 2007.

Women comprise the majority of the workforce in many non-traditional agricultural export (NTAE) industries, which international lending and aid agencies espouse as a development solution for rural poor people. In the Peruvian asparagus industry and the Colombian cut-flower plantations, however, women workers endure unsafe and substandard conditions.
