National Day of Action at Abercrombie & Fitch

Date:

Saturday, April 21, 2018 - 12:00am to Friday, March 29, 2024 - 1:01am

Five years ago, on April 24, 2013, the Rana Plaza building collapse in Bangladesh shocked much of the world, when 1,134 garment workers died in the deadliest disaster in the history of the global garment industry. At that point in time, Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F) was no stranger to the dangers garment workers faced, because 29 workers sewing for A&F in Bangladesh died in the 2010 That’s It Sportswear factory fire.

Date:

Thursday, April 19, 2018 - 2:00pm to Friday, March 29, 2024 - 1:01am

In Honduras, defending your rights at work can cost you your life. This event will highlight how workers in Honduras are standing up to corporations that exploit, harm and impoverish people in the name of profit. We will examine U.S. policy, violence against worker rights activists, and the root causes of the current migration crisis. Meet Honduran trade unionist, Tomas Membreño, and learn how people in the U.S. can support Honduran workers who harvest the fruit that ends up on our supermarket shelves.

CAFTA Guatemala Labor Arbitration Panel Discussion

Date:

Friday, March 9, 2018 - 3:30pm

In 2017, an international arbitration panel ruled against the United States in a case it brought under the labor chapter of the Dominican Republic - Central America Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA). Though the panel found that the Government of Guatemala failed to enforce its labor laws, it ruled that the U.S. failed to establish that these violations were “in a manner affecting trade.” The decision has been widely criticized for its excessively narrow interpretation of the labor chapter.
