Better Wages and Corporate Accountability to Workers in the Global Supply Chain

Date:

Thursday, May 28, 2015 - 8:30am to 10:15am

Location:

The Murphy Institute

New York, NY 10036

Two years after the Rana Plaza disaster in Bangladesh, sweatshop abuses continue. Workplace sexual violence is widespread; poor wages and wage theft are common; and survivors of fires and factory collapses, many of them children, have few options.  What alternatives are there to divestment and boycotts, which threaten workers’ jobs? What progress has been made in getting accountability from employers and governments on both ends of the supply chain?

Speakers:
Steven Greenhouse, former New York Times journalist
Judy Gearhart, Executive Director, International Labor Rights Forum
Helena Palmieri, United Students Against Sweatshops
Jeff Hermanson, Director of Global Strategies, Workers United-SEIU
Moderator: May Chen, Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies

Presented by The Joseph S. Murphy Institute and The Triangle Fire Coalition.
